International Convention For The Prevention Of Pollution From Ships

The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) is a key international maritime convention designed to minimize pollution of the seas, including dumping, oil and exhaust pollution. Its objective is to preserve the marine environment through the complete elimination of pollution by oil and other harmful substances and the minimization of accidental discharge of such substances. The convention includes regulations aimed at preventing and minimizing pollution from ships - both accidental pollution and that from routine operations. It currently includes six technical Annexes, focused on different types of ship pollution: oil (I), noxious liquid substances in bulk (II), harmful substances in packaged form (III), sewage (IV), garbage (V), and air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions (VI). All ships flagged under countries that are signatories to MARPOL are subject to its requirements, regardless of where they sail.
