International Safety Management Code

The International Safety Management Code (ISM Code) is a set of international regulations developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to ensure the safe operation of ships and the prevention of pollution. The ISM Code requires shipping companies to establish a safety management system (SMS) that includes policies and procedures for safe operation, maintenance, and emergency response. The SMS must be implemented on board the ship and monitored by the company to ensure compliance. The ISM Code applies to all commercial ships over 500 gross tonnage and is mandatory for all flag states that have ratified the convention.
