Jetsam

Jetsam refers to the goods or equipment that have been intentionally thrown overboard from a ship in distress or to lighten the load of the ship. These items are not tied to any buoy or floatation device and are left to sink or wash ashore. Jetsam can also refer to items that have been washed overboard by waves or storms. The act of throwing jetsam overboard is illegal and can result in fines or imprisonment. However, in some cases, it may be necessary to jettison jetsam to save the lives of the crew or passengers. Jetsam can be a hazard to navigation and can damage marine ecosystems if not properly disposed of.
