Lever

In maritime context, a lever is a simple machine consisting of a rigid bar that pivots around a fixed point, called a fulcrum, to apply force or transmit power. Levers are commonly used on ships for various purposes such as lifting heavy loads, adjusting sails, and steering the vessel. The most common types of levers used in the maritime industry are the first-class lever, second-class lever, and third-class lever. A first-class lever has the fulcrum located between the effort and the load, a second-class lever has the load located between the fulcrum and the effort, and a third-class lever has the effort located between the fulcrum and the load.
