VHF (Very High Frequency)

In the maritime context, VHF (Very High Frequency) refers to a range of radio frequency electromagnetic waves from 30 to 300 MHz, with corresponding wavelengths of ten to one meters. VHF is commonly used for marine communications to avoid the interference that can plague AM frequencies in urban areas, allowing for clearer signals and better communication. VHF radios are used on all large ships and most seagoing small craft. They are used for a variety of purposes, including summoning rescue services and communicating with harbors, locks, bridges, and marinas. A marine VHF set is a combined transmitter and receiver and only operates on standard, international frequencies known as channels. Channel 16 (156.8 MHz) is the international calling and distress channel. The maritime mobile service identity (MMSI) number associated with the ship's VHF radio can also be used to identify the ship in case of emergency.
