Overtaking

Overtaking is the act of passing another vessel traveling in the same direction. It is important to follow proper overtaking procedures to ensure the safety of both vessels. The overtaking vessel should sound a signal to indicate its intention to overtake and pass on the port side of the vessel being overtaken. The vessel being overtaken should maintain its course and speed until the overtaking vessel has safely passed. If there is any doubt about the situation, the vessel being overtaken may also sound a signal to indicate its awareness of the overtaking vessel. Overtaking should only be done in clear visibility and when there is ample space to do so.
