Seawater Scrubbing

Seawater scrubbing is a process of removing sulfur dioxide (SO2) from the exhaust gases of marine diesel engines. The process involves spraying seawater into the exhaust gas stream, which reacts with the SO2 to form sulfurous acid. The sulfurous acid is then neutralized by the alkaline seawater, resulting in the formation of sulfate and bicarbonate ions. Seawater scrubbing is an effective and environmentally friendly method of reducing SO2 emissions from ships, as it does not require the use of chemicals and produces no harmful byproducts. However, the process can be energy-intensive and may require additional equipment to be installed on board the ship.
