Sulfur Dioxide

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a colorless gas with a pungent odor that is released into the atmosphere during the combustion of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil. In the maritime context, SO2 emissions are a major concern due to their harmful effects on human health and the environment. SO2 can cause respiratory problems, acid rain, and contribute to the formation of smog. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set limits on SO2 emissions from ships, and ships are required to use fuels with lower sulfur content or install exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) to reduce their emissions.
