SECA
SECA stands for Sulphur Emission Control Area, which is a designated area in which stricter regulations are applied to reduce the amount of sulphur emissions from ships. The SECA regulations were introduced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to reduce the negative impact of shipping on the environment and human health. The current limit for sulphur content in fuel oil used by ships operating in SECA is 0.10% m/m (mass by mass), compared to the global limit of 0.50% m/m. SECA also requires the use of alternative fuels with lower sulphur content, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) or marine gas oil (MGO), or the installation of exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) to reduce sulphur emissions.
