Sedimentation

Sedimentation is the process of settling or deposition of particles carried by water or other fluids. In the maritime context, sedimentation can occur in ports, harbors, and waterways, where the movement of water is slowed down due to the presence of structures such as breakwaters, jetties, and piers. This can cause the sediment to settle and accumulate, leading to the gradual shallowing of the waterway and the formation of shoals. Sedimentation can also occur in the ballast tanks of ships, where the settling of sediment can lead to stability issues and corrosion of the tank. To prevent sedimentation, dredging is often necessary to remove the accumulated sediment and maintain the required depth of the waterway.
