Ship Pollution
Ship Pollution refers to the contamination of the marine environment caused by ships and other sea vessels. This pollution can take various forms, including oil spills, discharge of ballast water, and emission of air pollutants. Oil spills, often resulting from accidents or improper handling of fuel, can have devastating effects on marine life and ecosystems. Ballast water discharge, which is necessary for maintaining the stability of ships, can introduce invasive species into new environments, disrupting local ecosystems. Air pollutants, primarily in the form of exhaust gases from ship engines, contribute to global warming and climate change. In addition to these, ships also generate waste in the form of garbage, sewage, and hazardous substances, which if not properly managed, can lead to further pollution. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set regulations to control and reduce ship pollution, but enforcement remains a challenge due to the global nature of shipping.
