Sponson

A sponson is a projecting structure that extends from the side of a ship or boat to provide additional buoyancy and stability. Sponsons can be either fixed or retractable and are typically found on larger vessels such as warships, cruise ships, and cargo ships. They can also be used on smaller vessels such as kayaks and canoes to increase stability in rough water. Sponsons can be made of various materials including wood, metal, or inflatable materials. They are often used in conjunction with other stability systems such as ballast tanks and anti-roll tanks to provide a stable platform for the vessel.
