Sulfur Oxide Emissions

Sulfur Oxide (SOx) emissions refer to the release of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and other sulfur compounds into the atmosphere as a result of burning fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, in maritime transportation. These emissions contribute to the formation of acid rain, which can have harmful effects on human health, crops, and aquatic life. In order to reduce SOx emissions, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established regulations that require ships to use fuels with lower sulfur content, install exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers), or use alternative fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) or hydrogen. Compliance with these regulations is monitored through the use of emission control areas (ECAs) and the issuance of sulfur content certificates.
