Very High Frequency (VHF) Radios
In the maritime context, Very High Frequency (VHF) Radios refer to a type of communication device used on ships and other marine vessels for a variety of purposes. These radios operate in the frequency range of 156 to 174 MHz, which is designated as the marine band. VHF radios are primarily used for short-range communications, typically within visual line of sight, which makes them ideal for communication between vessels, or between a vessel and a shore station. They are essential for safety at sea, as they are used for distress calling and for the exchange of navigational and other safety messages. VHF radios also support digital selective calling (DSC), a function that allows a radio to send an automated distress signal to other DSC-equipped stations. In addition to their safety functions, VHF radios are also used for operational communications related to the management and operation of the vessel. They are a mandatory requirement on all large ships and most seagoing small craft as per the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations.
