Vessel Identification And Tracking

Vessel Identification and Tracking refers to the systems and procedures used to identify, locate, and monitor the movement of ships and other maritime vessels. This is typically achieved through the use of technologies such as the Automatic Identification System (AIS), Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT), and the Vessel Monitoring System (VMS). AIS is a maritime navigation safety communications system standardized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) that provides vessel information, including the vessel's identity, type, position, course, speed, navigational status and other safety-related information automatically to appropriately equipped shore stations, other ships, and aircraft. LRIT provides for the global identification and tracking of ships, which is essential for maritime safety and security. VMS is a satellite surveillance system primarily used for monitoring fishing vessels for compliance with regulations. These systems collectively contribute to the safety, security, and efficiency of maritime operations, aiding in collision avoidance, search and rescue operations, and law enforcement activities.
