Ballast Tank

A ballast tank is a compartment within a ship or other floating structure that holds water, which is used to provide stability and balance to the vessel. Ballast tanks are typically located in the lower part of the ship and are filled with water to increase the weight and lower the center of gravity of the vessel. This helps to prevent the ship from capsizing or rolling excessively in rough seas. Ballast tanks are also used to adjust the trim of the ship, which is the balance of the vessel from bow to stern. The amount of water in the ballast tanks can be adjusted to compensate for changes in cargo weight, fuel consumption, or other factors that affect the ship's stability.
