Barbette

In maritime context, a barbette is a platform or circular foundation on a ship's deck, typically located above the main deck and below the gun deck, used to support a rotating gun turret. The barbette provides a stable base for the turret and allows for a wider range of firing angles. Barbette-mounted guns were commonly used on battleships and cruisers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The term 'barbette' is derived from the French word 'barbette', meaning a small defensive fortification.
