Flag States
In the maritime context, 'Flag States' refers to the jurisdiction under which a vessel is registered or licensed. The flag state has the authority and responsibility to enforce regulations over vessels registered under its flag, including those relating to inspection, certification, and issuance of safety and pollution prevention documents. As a ship sails under the flag of its flag state, it must adhere to its laws, particularly when it comes to maritime matters. The choice of flag state can have a significant impact on the operations of a ship, as different flag states have different safety, labor, and environmental regulations, as well as varying levels of enforcement. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) encourages flag states to effectively exercise their jurisdiction and control over ships flying their flag to ensure safety at sea, prevent marine pollution, and secure seafarers' living and working conditions.
