Heave To

Heave To is a sailing maneuver that is used to stop or slow down a sailboat while still maintaining its position and stability. It involves setting the sails and adjusting the rudder in a way that the boat remains in a fixed position relative to the wind and waves. This maneuver is often used in adverse weather conditions, such as strong winds or high waves, to provide the crew with a break from the constant motion of the boat and to wait for the weather to improve. Heave To can also be used for safety reasons, such as to avoid collisions or to wait for rescue. It is an important skill for sailors to master, especially when sailing long distances or in challenging conditions.
