Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone

The Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is a belt of low pressure which circles the Earth generally near the equator where the trade winds of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres come together. It is characterized by convective activity which generates often vigorous thunderstorms over large areas. The ITCZ shifts its position seasonally and follows the sun's zenith position, moving north during the Northern Hemisphere summer and south during the Northern Hemisphere winter. Mariners crossing the ITCZ may experience calms, squalls, and thunderstorms, which can be a navigational hazard. The ITCZ is an important feature of the global atmospheric circulation and plays a significant role in the distribution of heat and moisture around the Earth.
