International Safety Management (ISM) Code
The International Safety Management (ISM) Code is a key regulatory framework in the maritime industry, established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). It provides an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships and for pollution prevention. The ISM Code mandates a Safety Management System (SMS) for shipping companies, which includes a set of procedures for safe operation and emergency preparedness. The ISM Code is applicable to all types of ships, including cargo ships, passenger ships, and oil tankers. It requires the ship owner or operator to establish a policy for achieving safety and environmental protection objectives, to ensure that adequate resources and shore-based support are provided to enable the designated person to carry out their duties, and to continuously improve safety management skills of personnel, including preparing for emergencies related both to safety and environmental protection. Compliance with the ISM Code is mandatory and its implementation is overseen by flag states and recognized organizations (ROs).
