Lazaretto

A lazaretto is a quarantine station for maritime travelers. It is a designated area where ships and their crews are required to anchor and undergo a period of isolation to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Historically, lazarettos were established on islands or remote coastal areas and were often used during times of epidemics such as the plague. The quarantine period could last from a few days to several weeks, depending on the severity of the outbreak. Lazarettos were equipped with medical facilities and staffed by healthcare professionals who monitored the health of the crew and passengers. Today, lazarettos are still used in some parts of the world to prevent the spread of diseases such as Ebola or SARS.
