NPDES
The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) is a permit program that regulates point sources that discharge pollutants into waters of the United States. The program is authorized by the Clean Water Act (CWA) and is implemented by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and delegated state agencies. NPDES permits contain limits on what and how much can be discharged, monitoring and reporting requirements, and other provisions to ensure that the discharge does not harm water quality or human health. The program applies to a wide range of industries and activities, including municipal wastewater treatment plants, industrial facilities, and construction sites.
