Side Lights

Side lights are navigation lights on a vessel that are used to indicate the direction of the vessel. They are located on the port and starboard sides of the vessel and are usually red and green in color. The side lights are used to determine the heading of the vessel at night or in low visibility conditions. The red light is located on the port side of the vessel and the green light is located on the starboard side. The side lights are required to be visible from a distance of at least two nautical miles and should be placed at a height that ensures maximum visibility. The use of side lights is regulated by the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS).
