Sulfur Oxides
Sulfur oxides (SOx) are a group of gases that are formed when sulfur-containing fuel, such as coal and oil, is burned. In the maritime context, SOx emissions are a major environmental concern as they contribute to acid rain, which can harm marine life and vegetation. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set limits on the amount of SOx emissions from ships, and ships are required to use fuels with lower sulfur content or install exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) to reduce their emissions. SOx emissions can also be reduced by using alternative fuels, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) or hydrogen.
