Topmast
A topmast is a mast located above the main mast and below the topgallant mast on a sailing vessel. It is used to support the topgallant mast and the royal mast. The topmast is usually made of wood and is secured to the main mast with shrouds and stays. It is used to increase the height of the ship's rigging, allowing for larger sails to be set and increasing the vessel's speed. The topmast can also be used as a lookout point or to carry additional signal flags. In modern times, the topmast is often replaced with a steel or aluminum pole, but the term is still used to refer to the highest mast on a sailing vessel.
