Visibility Range

Visibility range refers to the maximum distance at which an object or a light can be seen and identified by an observer. In maritime context, visibility range is an important factor for navigation and safety at sea. It is affected by various factors such as weather conditions, sea state, and the height of the observer's eye above the waterline. The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) require vessels to maintain a proper lookout at all times and take action to avoid collision when the visibility is restricted. In addition, vessels are required to display appropriate lights and sound signals to indicate their presence and maneuvering status in conditions of restricted visibility.
