Carbon Dioxide Emission
In the maritime context, carbon dioxide emission refers to the release of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere as a result of activities carried out by ships. These activities include the combustion of fossil fuels for propulsion, the operation of onboard machinery, and the production of electricity. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) estimates that ships contribute about 2.2% of the world's total CO2 emissions. This is a significant concern because CO2 is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming and climate change. To mitigate this, the IMO has set regulations to reduce the carbon intensity of international shipping. These regulations include energy efficiency design standards for new ships and operational measures for existing ships. Furthermore, the maritime industry is exploring alternative fuels and technologies, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydrogen, and battery-powered ships, to reduce CO2 emissions.
