Emission Control Measures

In the maritime context, Emission Control Measures refer to the set of regulations and technologies implemented to reduce the harmful emissions produced by ships. These measures are crucial in mitigating the environmental impact of maritime activities, particularly in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) designated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The measures include the use of cleaner fuels, the installation of exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers), and the implementation of energy-efficient operational measures. Cleaner fuels, such as low-sulphur fuel oil or liquefied natural gas (LNG), produce fewer emissions when burned. Exhaust gas cleaning systems, on the other hand, remove harmful substances from the ship's exhaust before it is released into the atmosphere. Energy-efficient operational measures include optimizing the ship's route and speed to reduce fuel consumption. Compliance with these measures is monitored and enforced through inspections and the use of monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems.
