IMO 2020

IMO 2020 is a regulation implemented by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) that came into effect on January 1, 2020. The regulation mandates a significant reduction in the sulphur content of the fuel oil used by ships. Prior to the implementation of IMO 2020, the maximum allowed sulphur content in ship fuel oil was 3.50% m/m (mass by mass). The new regulation reduces this limit to 0.50% m/m, representing an 86% cut. This regulation is part of the IMO's broader strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. The regulation applies to all ships, but there are exceptions for situations where the safety of the ship or its crew is at risk, or if a ship or its equipment is damaged. Ships can meet the IMO 2020 requirements by using low-sulphur compliant fuel oil, alternative fuels, or certain types of exhaust gas cleaning systems, which are often referred to as 'scrubbers'.
