MARPOL Annex VI

MARPOL Annex VI, officially known as 'Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships', is a set of regulations designed to minimize airborne emissions from ships (SOx, NOx, ODS, VOC) and their contribution to local and global air pollution and environmental problems. MARPOL Annex VI, first adopted in 1997, sets limits on sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions from ship exhausts and prohibits deliberate emissions of ozone depleting substances. It also includes energy efficiency measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships. The regulations apply to all ships of 400 gross tonnage and above engaged in international voyages. Compliance with the regulations is monitored by national administrations and by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the United Nations agency responsible for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships.
